Unique features: Our home was designed and constructed by my husband, my 2 children ages 14 and 9, and myself. We used The Strawbale House, by Steen and Bainbridge as our only guide and we successfully created a structure we could live in within a matter of months.
Problems encountered: Our major setback was "burn out" and we stopped construction for several months. We built large porches on 2 sides, but should have built them all around the house. Our horses rubbed against the bale walls and we had to realign them using our precision tool - the sledgehammer. (we have since fenced them away from the house).
2009 Update: We are still in the process of applying exterior clay to the bale walls, and are experimenting with Lime/clay mixtures. The interior walls are complete, however our floors still need attention.
